Neighborhood Watch

The Neighborhood Watch Program is a highly successful effort that has been in existence for more than thirtyJoin Neighborhood Watch years in cities and counties across America. It provides a unique infrastructure that brings together local officials, law enforcement and citizens to protect our communities.

Throughout Prince George’s County, neighbors have banded together to create Neighborhood Watch programs. They understand that the active participation of neighborhood residents is a critical element in community safety - not through vigilantism, but simply through a willingness to look out for suspicious activity in their neighborhood, and report that activity to law enforcement and to each other. In doing so, residents take a major step toward reducing crime in neighborhoods, as well as making people throughout a community feel more secure and less fearful.

In coordination with District 5 Police Neighborhood Coordinators, it is time for the residents of Boniwood to start a Neighborhood Watch Program. Recently the Board of Directors invited you to attend a meeting with Prince George’s Police Chief; Melvin High to learn of the status of crime in the county and more important what is being done to address crime in our neighborhood. The good news is that overall crime in the county is down in all measurable categories; however, Boniwood has had more than it’s share of incidents recently. We learned that the same crime issues and youth activity that we have in Boniwood, Board members for neighboring communities reported the same issues. The major difference between those communities and Boniwood is a well organized and successful Neighborhood Watch Programs that is improving the quality of their neighborhood life. We at Boniwood can have the same success.

The Neighborhood Watch Program is just that – Neighbors Watching Out for Neighbors and reporting suspicious activity. You can participate at varying levels that do not require a lot of time. Whether a Watch Coordinator, Block Captain or Block Watcher. There is this something we all can do. Participants ask neighbors to be alert, observant, and caring and to report suspicious activity to police. No suspicion is too insignificant to report.
